Helping the South Florida community has been a strong part of Dr. Gutierrez’s commitment. Dr. Pete Gutierrez has been a family care provider for over 25 years. He has specialized training in the treatment of opiate dependency and works with Metro Dade’s court system as a provider for mandated treatment. He has also been instrumental in the implementation of Narcan protocols for the Miami PD as part of the Miami Dade commissioner’s objective to reduce lethality in the county.
In 2009, the Miami Rescue Mission Health Clinic opened under his direction. The clinic offers medical treatment to the homeless and underserved community of over-town and downtown Hollywood. The clinic also provides clinical experience for physician assistants, nursing, and other health science students from Miami Dade College and other universities.
In 2012 he received the ‘Healthcare Heroes Award’ from the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce for his contribution to the South Florida health care community. The Individual of Merit honor noted the vital role Gutierrez played in establishing the Miami Rescue Mission Health Clinic. In addition Miami Dade College received an award from Michelle Obama for innovation in the community through this college-community clinic collaboration.
Since opening in August of 2009, the clinic serves over 11,500 individuals yearly. Gutierrez has expanded the clinic with offices in Hollywood, Downtown Miami and the Doral. His academic experience includes; Founding Chair of the Physician Assistant Program at the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine at Florida International
University, Dean of Miami Dade College-Medical Campus overseeing 19 Allied Health Programs and positions as faculty with Nova Southeast University, Ross University, SABA University, AUA and American University of Antigua University.
He is an affiliate of the American Heart Association to include BLS, PALS, ACLS, Past chair for the Southern region which included Alabama, Florida and Puerto Rico, Director of the MDPD Training Bureau,& Doral Police Training Bureau, a member of the Florida Department of Health Emergency Response Team & is a board member at Miami Beach Community Health Center, the Florida Free Clinics Association, Miami Rescue Mission & the Miami Rescue Mission Clinic.
Dr. Gutierrez served as a Miami Police Officer in the 1980’s receiving the Officer of the Year Award for the State of Florida. He is also a US Air force veteran. Prior to serving in the Air Force Dr. Gutierrez arrived in the United States via the Pedro Pan flight’s in the early 1960’s.
